The National Audit Office occupies a unique position in public life.
Responsible for scrutinising public spending, we audit the accounts of all central government departments and agencies, as well as a range of other public bodies, and report on the efficiency and effectiveness with which public money has been used.
We’re not a government body. We work on behalf of parliament – and, ultimately, taxpayers – to save the country millions of pounds a year. In fact, for every £1 of taxpayers’ money we spend, we save £9.
The fact that we cover all areas of government means that we’re involved in a huge range of work. Our reports come in all shapes and sizes, and can tackle everything from NHS IT initiatives to delays on the rail network. You can read summaries of our most recent reports here.
Many of the subjects we tackle are of vital importance to the nation. So, unsurprisingly, our reports often make headline news. The high-profile nature of our work is one of the things that make it so challenging. It means we have to take a meticulous approach and to achieve the highest standards in audit and investigative accountancy.
But it’s also one of the things that make the work so rewarding. With us, you’ll know that you’re making a major contribution to public services and, ultimately, to people’s lives throughout the UK.
