Working at the NAO

A diverse organisation that makes a difference.

Variety is one of the key things you’ll experience working at the NAO.

Take a look at some of our recent reports and you’ll begin to see just how wide-ranging our activities can be. You could potentially be working with people from the Ministry of Defence, the UK Film Council, NHS trusts, the Environment Agency… the list goes on. And that tends to make the work extremely interesting too.

Our activities are divided between financial audits and value for money reports. Financial audits involve auditing the accounts of government departments and agencies, and then reporting the results to parliament. In our value for money reports, we examine the economy, efficiency and effectiveness with which public money has been spent.

As you become more experienced, you could either move on to increasingly challenging audits or, alternatively, focus on value-for-money studies from initial proposal to final publication. Or maybe a bit of both. You could even apply for a short-term secondment to the private or public sector if you want to broaden your horizons.
